Stephen - Speaking out about mental health

Stephen's story - Speaking out about mental health

14th November 2017, 2.19pm

“I always knew I was having problems with my mental health. I felt really different to everyone else and I really struggled in school. I felt lonely. You can be surrounded by loads of people but it feels like no one understands you.

"Once when I was young a friend of mine said he thought I was a ‘bit mental’ and could do with having some counselling. For the first two sessions I didn’t say anything but then I got really fed up and started talking! I felt like my friend saved my life because if he hadn’t told me to talk to someone, if he wasn’t there when I needed him, I wouldn’t be here today.

"I think you’ve got to talk, but it’s not necessarily to the people you think you should talk to. I still find it tough to talk to my parents about my mental health and if I had gone through life thinking I could only talk to them I wouldn’t have talked to anyone."

“Mental health does not discriminate, so why should we?”

"There is stigma by the older generation and an attitude to just ‘get on with it’ – which may have delayed the time for me to seek help."

“I want to be a catalyst for change wherever I can”

“Being vulnerable and looking to learn something new to help your physical and mental wellbeing is a major strength. It’s difficult, which is why it can be scary. It’s so worth it, though!”
