Beth & Emily - Friendship & mental health

Beth & Emily's story - Friendship and mental health

14th November 2017, 2.16pm

“I think my first ever proper panic attack was when I was in Year 4. It was just so confusing and really scary. I got to that point where I was always very much like ‘I didn’t want to talk to anyone’, ‘I didn’t want to upset anyone’.

"The majority of my friends reacted well. My Mum cried, my Dad started Googling it which is what he does when he doesn’t understand something, and started buying books on it! Having mental health problems is OK, it doesn’t make you any different and you’re still the person you were before. You’ve got to talk about it. There are always going to be people in the world that might not understand, but there will always be people that will save your life 10 times over and not even realise it.”

“Mental health does not discriminate, so why should we?”

"There is stigma by the older generation and an attitude to just ‘get on with it’ – which may have delayed the time for me to seek help."

“I want to be a catalyst for change wherever I can”

“Being vulnerable and looking to learn something new to help your physical and mental wellbeing is a major strength. It’s difficult, which is why it can be scary. It’s so worth it, though!”
