World Mental Health Day 2020 Statement

Despite improvements in public attitudes to mental health, Time to Change Wales recognises that stigma continues to be a problem for many people living with a mental health problem.

This year’s World Mental Health Day (10 October) comes at a time when our daily lives have changed considerably as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. In Wales and across the globe, the pandemic has resulted in a rise of mental health issues and talking openly about mental health continues to be an important issue.

Despite improvements in public attitudes to mental health, Time to Change Wales recognises that stigma continues to be a problem for many people living with a mental health problem.

Stigma covers many different forms (teasing, abuse, not being trusted, losing friends and family, loss or not getting a job, exclusion from education, training, social activities and clubs). Stigma has become a barrier which prevents people from seeking support, however with the help from our Champions and the voices of those with lived experience of mental health problems, we can tackle this together.

It is now more important than ever to join Time to Change Wales to help end mental health stigma and discrimination once and for all in Wales.
